Well, we’ve been working on a document for months and at last the text was signed off today. Typically, BMS has worked on three-year strategy cycles, and the last one ended on 31 October. Yes, you could say we’ve been rudderless for the last 4 days but so far the sky hasn’t fallen in!
This strategy development period has been different in several respects. Firstly it coincided with my start as General Director and so was the perfect opportunity to ask fresh questions about where we believe God is leading us in the next few years.
We also involved people far more widely than before, and from a consultation document we put on our website earlier this year, we received hundreds of responses. Almost all were helpful, some brilliantly so!
Along the way we sensed we were developing a different kind of document than we set out to achieve. Instead of a strategy document, we felt we were addressing deeper issues that touched primarily on vision and values, on our relationship as an organisation with God and how best to be his servants in the years to come.
So, the text is complete, and before long we’ll publish the document. That’ll be before Christmas and will be available on our website (Click here) as well as in print.
And if all this doesn't light your candle, remember that restating a mission’s vision and values, and from that charting the course of our work for the next few years, is amongst the most important tasks set before us. If we get this right, then along the way we will more effectively make Jesus known around the world. It’s as important as that.
